Team J is casting for an audio drama series: an ongoing series in the spirit of Old Time Radio such as Gunsmoke or Escape, but with modern sensibilities and production values. It will be recorded in Springfield, VA and begin podcasting in 2010.
Actors working on the production will be paid a small stipend. For those interested in learning details and how to submit your resume for consideration, please read on.
F.A.Q.
What is Rogue Tyger?
Rogue Tyger is a science fiction action/adventure series much in the same mold as Firefly or Farscape. It is the first of what may be several audio drama series to be podcast by Jabberwocky Audio Theater.
Wait a minute, what’s Jabberwocky Audio Theater?
“JAT” will be a production of Team Jabberwocky, the same folks who produce Stonehenge and occasional short films.
It is our intention to create several different original audio series for JAT and podcast them weekly in alternate runs or “seasons.”
We want to record this “pilot” for Jabberwocky Audio Theater to test our workflow and make sure we’re able to deliver a high quality production while still having fun. After all, maintaining a regular show can become onerous in the best of conditions.
What is the shooting recording schedule?
The pilot will be recorded in Springfield, VA in late December or early January on a single Saturday from 9 to 5, although we may not need the actors for the full time. We plan to take more time with the first episode as we will be creating sound effects and music to be used for the ongoing series.
After completing the pilot, we will plan to record one episode on one Saturday every month, starting as soon as late February. Each 50-60 minute episode of Rogue Tyger is composed of 5 10-12 minute parts meaning we’ll be able to begin the podcast after finishing a few episodes.
What do I get out of it?
First and foremost, we hope this will be a fun project for you, offering the chance to work on a recurring character amid your other acting jobs. Then there are the obligatory snacks and lunch at the recording session and a mastered CD of the episode/season.
We are exploring ways to have sponsors, advertisements, and Cafe Press bling support the podcast. For now, we are looking to pay actors a stipend per recording day on that day.
General Disclaimer
Because this is audio drama, we are not concerned with the age of the actor so much as the quality of his or her voice. We have noted when a younger or older voice is needed, but have mainly focused on describing the character we want revealed from the voice.
PRINCIPALS
Reg Macorum, Captain of the Tyger
Male Voice
Sardonic and assured, Reg is a man who seldom likes to be wrong and is prepared to remove all manner of obstacles to get what he deems as right. He may be a former favored son of the Zenocrate Cartel, but it’s clear he wants to leave his past behind.
Shen En Ling, XMD
Female Voice
A clinician by training, but a born adventurer, Dr. Shen can handle a scalpel and a blaster with equal ease. Her impish nature comes out in her frequent teasing of her crewmates. She could also drink Marion Ravenwood under the table.
Aidan Vosky, new crewmember
Younger Male Voice (18-21)
A callow if intelligent youth eager to escape the lack of opportunities in the Outer Systems. Like Reg, he has a past. Unlike Reg, he wants to uncover it.
Tormar, ship’s engineer
Male Voice
A curmudgeon who feels that he does more than anyone else on the ship and that humans don’t have enough arms. His speech is bookish and demonstrates this is not his native language.
Grainne Kochowa, ship’s pilot and navigator
Female Voice
Along with Tormar, Grainne (pronounced GRAHN-yuh) is the other non-human on the Tyger. She is calm, methodical, and uncannily perceptive of people’s behavior. The captain appreciates her insights and Enling appreciates her capacity to hold liquor.
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS
Captain Sylvia Malabar
Female Voice
Captain Malabar thinks that Lady MacBeth failed due to not being sufficiently hands-on. She works for the Zenocrate Cartel and not coincidentally owns Reg’s old ship.
Princess Nalini (al-Zamin)
Younger Female Voice (18-21)
Nalini is the eldest daughter of the Grand Duke Khalil al-Zamin, ruler of the Royal House of Clark-Timurin. She will never let you forget this fact.
Taquermeraphon 651 (“Tinker”)
Male Voice
A robot in the service of the House of Clark-Timurin, Tinker has a flat, straightforward voice that’s all business...and he also seems to be on his own timetable.
George Konstantinos
Older Male Voice (55 - 65)
The heavyset leader of the Zenocrate Cartel used to having his own way.
Jochi Bortay, Sylvia’s XO
Male Voice
Jochi used to work for Reg and if you could bottle the bitterness in his voice, you could sell it as a drink mixer.
Vic Ratha
Male Character Voice
An underworld fixer based out of Flatrock. Vic can find what and who you need, for a price, and the promise that you keep it all on the Q T.
Note:
Every episode will have two to three additional voices beyond the characters listed.
